The UE46D7000 is the second generation of 3D televisions after last years C7000 series hit the shops. Now the C7000 range was good but not amazing and most industry professionals always knew that it would take a year or two before we started to see real 3D televisions that worked really well, so have Samsung pushed ahead with the new 2011 range? Well I’m pleased to report that YES they have!

Let’s start off by looking at what you get for your money!
Well as you would expect from Samsung this television really is stunning to look at from an aesthetic point of view, it has an ultra thinultra-thin design which looks to be even thinner than last year's model if that's possible, the frame itself on this 46 inch 3-D TV is only 5 mm, yes that's right 5 millimetres and the set itself is as light as a feather, you could easily pick up this television set on your own without any problems at all so mounting on a wall wouldn't be a hard task even if your walls of paper thin, but just make sure you buy the correct mountings.
This television really would look good in any living room and really does make a stunning centrepiece without even being turned on.

Now let's move on to the actual picture quality of the screen itself. Of course this is one of the most important aspects of buying a new television and when testing the picture quality I always revert back to the same to Blu-ray discs to view the 2-D experience I always use the dark Knight, for 3-D I use avatar. Unlike a lot of the top review sites you will not find any grafts or mathematical equations, I just tell you about what I see on the screen as an avid moviegoer . I have to say that watching the Blu-ray version of the dark Knight on this television was absolutely stunning; the black levels were like something from the old Pioneer sets. One of the problems that last year's models had was the ability or not to turn off the dynamic backlighting and this proved to be quite a serious problem, fortunately though this time round Samsung has taken the feedback on the previous model to heart and this is now greatly reduced on the UE46D7000 and the colour was distributed almost perfectly.
Of course as the Samsung UE46D7000 is a 3-D television we had to try and see what improvement Samsung has made over the course of the last year. Both the plasma and LCD first-generation 3-D TVs all had problems when it came to reproducing 3-D content at home from screens being either too dark or seeing a nasty ghosting effect around the image, but I'm happy to report that Samsung could really have worked hard at this and they have significantly improved the 3D picture quality to such an extent but halfway through watching Avatar I forgot about looking out for the floors and was totally immersed in the film.

With regards to some sins 2D to 3D conversion again to be honest I did not notice a significant improvement, I still see this as more of a gimmick and for me personally would never really use this feature, I would rather wait and watch a true 3-D Blu-ray movie.

3D Glasses

Of course one of the main reasons for buying this Samsung television is that you want to step into the world of 3D and unfortunately at the moment that does mean having to wear 3D glasses. The first generation of 3D glasses did have a few issues, so how has Samsung got on with this years specs!
Well the good news is that Samsung have made changes to the glasses and they work so much better, gone is the 3D glasses sync up to the TV via infrared and it’s now done by Bluetooth which gives it a much better connectivity to the television. Another feature we noted was that the glasses were a lot lighter than last year’s models…now the Samsung 3D glasses are not the best on the market, but they are nowhere near the worst either.
Another feature is that the Samsung detects if a 3D source is playing and if it’s not the UE46D7000 automatically shuts off the glasses.

SMART TV
Another great feature on the new Samsung 3DTV is labeled Smart TV! Now as you may be aware televisions have come on leaps and bounds over the last few years and are no longer just a window to view programmes and films...today the TV really is the centre of your home entertainment system with the ability to download apps for your 3D television that allows you not only surf the internet but also be able to access all your social sites including facebook, twitter and skype.

"Fantastic picture quality! Easy to set up and use. Shippers were great, unpacked the TV and made sure it worked before they left. The only complaint is I spent my 1st whole night wondering why all my shows looked the Soap Operas. Turns out this is caused by Samsung "Auto Motion Plus" feature that adds extra calculated frames to the video stream. Turning this off made the picture look as I expected (i.e. Law and Order's proper gritty/jerky camera motion when the detectives are on the street). When this mode is off the tv is still running at 240Hz, but shows the same frames unaltered over and over just like the movie theater does rather than trying to "make stuff up" in between frames. I now only turn on the "Auto Motion Plus" when watching hockey".

"I own several Samsung products and have been pleased with each one. I have also read of the horror stories of working with Samsung customer support and must say in my case all were proved false. I did my homework and was waffling between the UN46C7000 and the UN46C6300, thought for the extra money the 7000, 3D Blu-Ray Player and starter kit would be a fun addition to the house. Yep, I know it's a gimmick and there are few movies to support the feature but Blu-Ray movies and HD television look spectacular and I would recommend the UN46C7000 on that alone. If I were to have one wish granted it would be to include built-in Wi-Fi instead of the add on stick, come on Samsung I paid a premium for this TV!"

3D could bear even more refining; Smart Hub still awaits iPlayer

So by now it’s clear the UE46D7000 is a formidable TV with talent to burn.

The price difference between it and the LG 47LW650T makes us feel the LG represents even better value, but if you’re in the market for a premium product that features premium looks alongside premium performance, the D7000 is the TV for you.
